Hope for the Land of the Free

So it has been found that Jose Padilla, a U.S. citizen can not be held without a trial. It will surely go to appeal, but I have to say I’m really optimistic that for the first time in a long time it appears that the ideals of our Democracy are going to triumph over the fascists in the white house. This is the case that made me originally start writing “Scaping the Goat”. Perhaps this is the beginning of the end of their roughshod ride over the rights of the U.S. citizen. Perhaps this could even be turned around to make the White House criminally libel for kidnapping a U.S. citizen. Oh… that’s probably going too far, we could never arrest a president for crimes against his own citizens…

Tonight I got frustrated and posted this on Kuro5hin

For the sake of the nation…

As we go into another night of filibustering in the senate it occurs to me that perhaps we’ve gone too far. That there is perhaps no turning back. How do we heal this? How do we go back to politics as usual?

First off I’m a Texan. I live in Austin which is fairly liberal - for Texas. Here I am generally labeled either as a socialist or a communist. That’s fine because I realize from their perspective I am. It’s been getting worse lately though. Why are Democrats using procedural measures to block judicial nominees? Why did Democrats flee my state?

I can answer these both quite succinctly. The United States was founded to protect the rights of minority groups. I know that’s hard for people to understand, and that it goes against much of what we’re told, but it’s everywhere. Every single process, every single institution in the United States has a myriad of procedural steps. Is this simply because our founding father’s liked red tape? Is it because historically the U.S. government has had nothing better to do than to pass procedural rules? No. Simply put it’s to protect the few from the best intentions of the many. If the current Texas redistricting map passes I will live in the largest U.S. city without a representative in the House. A large number of the parents who led their kids up to my door to trick-or-treat in late October are now in a separate voting district from me. But I am the bad-guy Democrat. Because I simply want my community to have a voice.

That voice is the reason I feel that I need to write, and that we all need to come forward and start talking.

Do the Democrats have all the solutions? No.

Do the Republicans? No.

Do either of them have even a few solutions…?

If you listen to either party you would think it was true. Many Democrats want to band together in the next election and form a cohesive voting block like the Republicans have. But I don’t think any of us want that sort of Democratic party. What would we have to give up? The Republicans have given up any sort of debate on important issues such as Privacy, Small Government, Fiscal Responsibility, and the Role of the U.S. as the Worlds Police Force. They have decided to focus solely on Abortion, Anti-Terrorism, and Tax-cuts. I can’t even imagine how that list would read for the Democrats. So what do we have to do? If we are going to proceed at all we must start talking and dealing with the issues below:

  • The War in Iraq/Afghanistan was right/wrong.

At this point public opinion is obviously wavering, but it doesn’t escape an idealogical truth that both parties like to ignore. War is wrong. Ultimately, the entire point of civilization is to keep us from warring. So whether or not you support Bush/troops or withdrawal/troops ultimately we are in a situation that must be solved. We cannot let Iraq and Afghanistan collapse. We cannot keep pretending that these are “wars” that we can win. We must stop blaming. Obviously, an overwhelming number of Americans supported the war. Many now are saying they were duped by the Bush Administration. Aside from pointing out that you are perhaps one of the greatest dunces to ever live to be duped by the Bush Administration, this misses the entire point. War is not politics. People’s lives are on the line. You can’t fix the problem by saying you were tricked, and you can’t fix the problem by saying that if there was just a little more public support the troops would be able to finish there mission and come home. Those are both ridiculous fantasies. So what do we do now?

  • You can(not) attack terrorism

This is the most fundamental flaw in world thought right now. You cannot attack terrorism. The Israeli/Palestinian conflict has been an incubator for showing why this wasn’t possible. When you attack terrorism you attack normal people. Normal people then feel attacked and fight back. Normal people are not an army and thus resort to what is called terrorism, because they don’t have the resources to fight an army. Cycle of violence is created. And we keep going, forever and ever and ever. Or we have genocide. Take your pick. At this point all the conservative readers are saying, “Oh he just wants to go out and love all the terrorists into surrendering,” and all the liberal readers are nodding their heads in agreement with me. Stop that. I didn’t propose a solution here by pointing out a fact. Discuss this seriously. How do you stop terrorism? How do you change people who generally have very real, very serious grievances into people who want to work for peace? The only violent solution is killing everyone on earth. The only completely placating solution is giving people everything they want. Obviously neither is feasible, so come up with something that is.

  • It is (not)acceptable to give up some of our civil liberties in a time of war

Absolutely not. If you want safety go to China. It’s one of the safest countries going. No one’s going to attack them because of their population. If on the other hand there’s something you like about the United States other than safety you might consider staying here. And you might consider how we give law enforcement the ability to find terrorists in the United States without reading library records and tracking our every bowel movement.

  • No new taxes

Pay your taxes. Enough said. Trickle-down has again not worked. Can we put this to bed? Lets get back to the work of building schools and build roads and stop playing these games. Wonder why your property and sales tax rate is so high? Could it perhaps be because you’ve stopped paying most of your federal tax? The money has to come from somewhere. Stop being such a baby about taxes and start thinking about what you want your money and your government to be doing for you. Taxes are important because they give us what we need. We are not being robbed. I can’t afford a road or a school and I’d bet that neither can you.

  • The majority rules

The majority does not rule. The United States was founded by numerous groups fleeing majorities that were not fond of them. Republicans should have their way more often than Democrats when they are in the majority, but they should stop trying to destroy the Democratic party. And they should stop saying when Democrats disagree that they are being babies. This is politics, you are supposed to disagree.

This has to come from both sides. No more destruction. Talk to each other. And stop spouting rhetoric you heard on your AM right of the dial or your FM left.

If the United States is going to overcome what is quickly becoming one of the worst financial, political, and military crisis it has ever faced, it is going to need people thinking. So start thinking. The Internet has provided us a wonderful forum to explore ideas and to band together towards common goals. So stop the rhetoric and offer solutions, please. We have serious problems here. Thank you non-U.S. citizen readers for indulging us and please offer your input, we’re going to need all the help we can get in turning this behemoth around.

Note to self: Buy earplugs

My frickity-frack ears won’t stop ringing.

Does Tempra Paint have Formaldehyde in it?

It sure smells like it.

Are you sure that it hasn’t gone bad or something?

Lets have some quiet for 911

So the company that manages the building I work in gave everyone ‘remember septermber 11th’ cards again. Well actually the cleaning lady did. The thing I love, and I had not realized this, is that apparently we should only remember the ‘heroes’ who died on September 11th and in terrorist attacks after that. Apparently there was NEVER a terrorist attack anywhere, ever before 2001. Or they don’t care about them. I hear that somebody blew up some stuff in Oklahoma city once. Oh yeah, and there was a plane that exploded over Scottland. So according to my building management either:

  1. These people were not heroes.
  2. These were not acts of terror.

God bless America. Let me rephrase, God bless Americans who spend a moment in silence remembering the fallen ‘heroes’ of 9/11 and the terror attacks since. Because blessed are the silent in rememberence for theirs shall be the unemployment line.

Vote

or be a lemming hurling yourself off a cliff. It is un-american to not vote. Only jingoistic lard-ass couch potatoes don’t vote. VOTE!

Repressed Homosexuality explains desire for Economic Rape

I’ve been trying to figure out why so many people I talk to feel so confident about their jobs. How they can keep morale up while most of their friends are on unemployment. While one could see it as either a sign of fanatical faith in their employer or complete stupidity, I have to come to the conclusion that is something much simpler. The average American voter is a Repressed Homosexual. I realize this may be hard for some people to take (especially many who are Repbulican), but how else to explain the large numbers of people who are pro tax-cut but are not earning any money to tax? Obviously there is a large amount of the American Public that feels something is missing in their life, and is looking to get it from the American Government. It seems clear to me that this is why we suddenly have so many articles about the “Gaying” of America. Why everyone is now watching shows about Homosexuals or Home Recorating or both. I urge the American public to come out of the closet, so we can put this horrible “recovery” behind us, and actually get on with the process of “employing” people. So we can stop launching “missles” at foreign countries and get them back in our bedrooms where they belong. It is time to admit who we are and stop accepting the bribery checks from the U.S. government. After all, they’ve already sent out one for each spouse and child. How long can $300 keep you wife’s mouth shut? How long can $1000 keep your child from saying the dardnest things? One of these days you won’t have any more money to give, and the word will be out - You vote a “Straight Sodomy” ticket.

Can you say \"Hubris\"?

I love listening to a large portion of the techno-elite speak. It’s so depressing, and speaks well for their impending doom. I hear more and more darwinistic talk all the time. I keep hearing people say that it’s perfectly acceptable for people at the top of the heap to behave badly. Because, well, they’re there. Its ok for Microsoft to set the government’s policy on software design, because they’re the most successful computer software company going. Its ok for Haliburton to get the contracts to rebuild Iraq, because they were a succesful company that made some fantastic strategic contacts. The moral decay is astounding. I feel like I’m watching the edge of a precipice. I see the capitalists at the top shouting “Let them eat cake!” I make no predictions of how it will end, but I’m pretty sure if Sophocles and Shakespeare have endured for hundreds of years on the universality of their stories, then corporate America is nearing its end. Its how the story goes. It is inevitable. I posit that ultimately the saying should not be “Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.”, but rather “Those who try to outsmart the past…”

Why Republican\'s are right...

So I was thinking about the Republican model of Capitalism. In their world we defund groups like the EPA so that business can work unhindered. This would allow business to work faster, cheaper, and more efficiently. Industry would be self-regulating since if they were doing something their customers didn’t like, their customers wouldn’t buy their product. Without the EPA nuclear plants could find the best places to store spent nuclear fuel without burdensome regulation. The general public wouldn’t have to worry about this, since if they put it too close to someone’s house the media would alert the nation that the nuclear company in question was being naughty. The company would be forced to move their dump, and pay the mutant human millions of dollars in pain and suffering. No EPA necessary. The system has worked properly. This is the way it should be. As long as all companies are dumping things as toxic as nuclear waste. And you’re not the mutant in question.

So I was feeling a bit down...

I got this email from a person at Mu Kappa which is an organization for Missionary Kids, and I was really upset when they took a lot of offense to one of Erin’s diary entires. I realise that we all have foul mouths, but in this case (while looking like a porn link), Erin’s entry was actually commenting on a book that had offended/impacted us all. I felt like I had disappointed the whole Christian cause. But then I went through and looked at my writing, and realized… you know what? I have nothing to be ashamed of. Everything I have written has been me, and I’m proud of. And the people I have choosen as friends, I have choosen because they are good people and they challenge me to be a better writer. Who knows why I feel the need to feel validation… I guess I’m just disappointed because in Dallas M.K. was very much about understanding that Missionary Kids are never going to meld with society in a graceful way,  and I forget that there are people in Wycliff who swing lockstep with the religous right. Ok, that’s too far. I guess it’s just that there’s no outreach to the intellegent people in the religious right. There’s no one saying, “Hey you, thinking person, you have doubts about this party? Perhaps you think there’s a better way? Well there is, and it doesn’t mean you’re a satanist.” I dunno. I just worry that so many people are being lead astray. The one Bible verse that I am completely unable to remove from my mind is Matthew 19:24:

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, It is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven” (NIV)

I just think of that again, and again, and again. I can’t help but think that I’m rich. I don’t know exactly what percentage of American’s I’m in, but I do recall from doing taxes that it’s one of the top 3 brackets. And I drive a Golf. And I don’t really worry about money. And there are people starving. Not America starving. Not 89 cents will buy me a McDonads Hamburger starving.  But really starving. Like I don’t have money to buy a pound of rice. Ah well…
